Times Tables the Korean Way: Gugudan Chants and How to Use Them at Home

If you've ever walked past an elementary school in Korea in the early afternoon, there's a decent chance you've heard it: a room full of kids chanting numbers in a steady, sing-song rhythm. That's gugudan (구구단) — the Korean multiplication table — and it's one of those small cultural habits that quietly does a lot of heavy lifting in a child's math education.

I run a math academy in Korea, and I've watched thousands of kids move through this stage. Some sail through. Some get stuck for months. The difference is almost never talent. It's usually just how they practiced. So let me walk you through what gugudan actually is, why the chanting works, and — most importantly — how to use it at home without turning your kitchen table into a battleground.

What is gugudan, exactly?

The name comes from 구 (gu, "nine") twice, plus 단 (dan, "level" or "section"). Literally: "nine-nine table." In practice, it's the multiplication facts from 2×1 through 9×9, organized into nine "dan" — the 2-dan, the 3-dan, and so on up to the 9-dan.

Notice what's not there: no 1-dan, and traditionally no 10-dan. The 1s are considered too trivial to drill, and the 10s follow such an obvious pattern that Korean curricula don't bother chanting them. That leaves 8 sections of 9 facts each — 72 facts total. It feels like a lot to a seven-year-old, which is exactly why the chant exists.

In the Korean school system, gugudan is formally introduced in second grade. But most Korean kids meet it earlier, at home or in kindergarten, in the same way English-speaking kids meet the alphabet song — as a rhythm before it's a concept.

How the chant actually sounds

Here's the part that's genuinely different from how English speakers usually do times tables. A Korean child doesn't say "two times three equals six." They say:

"이 삼은 육" (i sam-eun yuk) — literally "two, three is six."

That's it. Four syllables. No "times." No "equals." Just the two numbers and the answer, glued together with a tiny grammatical particle. Compare that to the English mouthful — "two times three equals six" is seven syllables and takes roughly twice as long to say.

This compactness matters more than it sounds. Korean uses Sino-Korean numerals (일 il, 이 i, 삼 sam, 사 sa, 오 o, 육 yuk, 칠 chil, 팔 pal, 구 gu) for this — all single syllables. So the entire 3-dan becomes a tight, drummable little sequence:

  • 삼 일은 삼 (sam il-eun sam) — 3, 1 is 3
  • 삼 이는 육 (sam i-neun yuk) — 3, 2 is 6
  • 삼 삼은 구 (sam sam-eun gu) — 3, 3 is 9
  • 삼 사 십이 (sam sa sib-i) — 3, 4 is 12
  • 삼 오 십오 (sam o sib-o) — 3, 5 is 15

You'll notice the particle changes — 은 after a consonant sound, 는 after a vowel — and that once the answer hits two digits, the particle usually drops entirely for speed. Korean kids don't learn these rules; they just absorb the rhythm. Which is the whole point.

Why chanting works (and where it doesn't)

Let me be honest about the limits here, because I think parents deserve a straight answer.

Chanting builds fluency, not understanding. A child who can rattle off the 7-dan in eight seconds has not necessarily grasped that 7×4 means four groups of seven. Those are two different skills, and Korean education has occasionally been criticized — fairly — for pushing the chant so hard that the meaning gets left behind.

But fluency is not nothing. When a child has to stop and reconstruct 6×8 from scratch every time it appears, their working memory is fully occupied by the arithmetic. There's nothing left over for the actual problem — the fractions, the word problem, the long division. Automatic recall frees up mental space. That's the real argument for drilling, and it's a good one.

So the honest position is: do both. Build the meaning with objects and pictures, then build the speed with the chant. Not one or the other.

How to use gugudan at home

Here's what I'd actually recommend, in the order I'd do it.

1. Start with meaning, for about a week

Before any chanting, get the concept in place. Lay out 4 rows of 3 buttons. Count them. Now lay out 3 rows of 4. Count those too. Same answer, different arrangement — that's commutativity, and discovering it yourself is worth more than being told.

Skip-counting is the natural bridge: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15. Do it going up stairs, do it while walking. It's multiplication wearing a friendly disguise.

2. Then pick your order — and it's not 2 through 9

The traditional order is sequential, but I don't think that's optimal for most kids. Here's the order I'd use:

  • 2-dan first — it's just doubling, and most kids already half-know it.
  • 5-dan next — the pattern (5, 10, 15, 20…) is so visible that it feels like cheating.
  • 3-dan and 4-dan — still small enough to check by counting if they get stuck.
  • 9-dan — yes, out of order, and on purpose. The digits of every answer sum to 9 (18, 27, 36, 45…), and the tens digit climbs by one while the ones digit falls by one. Kids find this genuinely delightful, and it makes the "hard" table into an easy win.
  • 6-dan, 7-dan, 8-dan last — these are the genuinely hard ones. By the time you get here, commutativity has already given your child half of them for free.

That last point deserves emphasis. If a child knows 2×7, 3×7, 4×7, 5×7, and 9×7 from earlier tables, the 7-dan has only four new facts left: 6×7, 7×7, 8×7, and 7×10. Framing it that way — "you already know most of this" — changes a child's whole posture toward it.

3. Chant in short bursts, not long sessions

Two minutes, three times a day beats twenty minutes once. Car rides, teeth-brushing, waiting for the bus. The chant is designed to be portable — that's its main advantage over worksheets.

Try alternating lines: you say "3, 4," your child says "12." Then swap. It turns a drill into a call-and-response game, and it lets you hear exactly where the hesitation is.

4. Watch for the hesitation, not the errors

This is the single most useful diagnostic I can give you. Wrong answers are obvious and easy to fix. The thing to actually track is the pause — the half-second where a child's eyes drift up and to the left. That's them computing instead of recalling. It means the fact isn't automatic yet, even though they got it right.

Note which facts cause the pause. In my experience, it's almost always the same small cluster: 6×7, 7×8, 6×8, 7×9. Four or five facts, not seventy-two. Target those specifically instead of re-drilling the whole table.

5. Break the sequence

Here's the trap with chanting: kids memorize the sequence, not the facts. Ask a child mid-chant what 6×7 is and they'll often restart from 6×1 and count up. That's not fluency — that's a party trick.

So once the chant is smooth, deliberately break it. Ask facts at random. Ask them backward ("what times 6 makes 42?"). Ask them from the answer ("tell me two numbers that multiply to 24" — and there are several, which is a nice conversation in itself). This is the step most families skip, and it's where the real learning consolidates.

Should you use the Korean words?

If you're not a Korean-speaking family — honestly, it's optional. The rhythmic principle transfers to English perfectly well. You can compress "seven times eight equals fifty-six" down to "seven eight fifty-six" and get most of the benefit.

That said, a lot of kids find the Korean version fun precisely because it's foreign. It feels like a code rather than homework. If your child is the type to enjoy that, teaching them the nine Sino-Korean number words takes about ten minutes and gives them a small, real piece of another language. No downside.

A realistic timeline

For a typical seven- or eight-year-old doing a few minutes daily: expect two to three weeks per table at the start, speeding up considerably as patterns click. The whole set usually takes somewhere between three and six months to become genuinely automatic. Some kids do it in six weeks. Some take a year. Both are fine.

The thing I'd most want to leave you with: gugudan works because it's small, rhythmic, and repeated often — not because it's intense. The Korean advantage here isn't discipline or pressure. It's that the chant is short enough to fit into the cracks of an ordinary day, so it actually gets done.
