Why Korean Kids Drill 10 Minutes of Arithmetic Every Day (And How to Try It at Home)
Walk past a Korean kitchen table at 7:30 in the morning and you'll often see the same small scene: a child, a sharpened pencil, a single sheet of arithmetic problems, and a parent half-watching while the rice cooker beeps. Ten minutes later the sheet is done, checked, and back in the folder. Nobody makes a big deal of it. It's about as dramatic as brushing teeth.
I run a math academy in Korea, and parents from outside the country often ask me about this habit — sometimes admiringly, sometimes suspiciously. Isn't it just rote memorization? Doesn't it kill curiosity? Those are fair questions, and I want to answer them honestly, because the daily drill is one of the most misunderstood parts of Korean math education. Done badly, it really is a waste of a child's morning. Done well, it's one of the highest-return ten minutes you can spend.
It was never about being fast
The best argument for daily arithmetic has nothing to do with speed and everything to do with mental space.
Working memory — the mental desk where you hold information while you're using it — is small. Everyone's is. When a ten-year-old sits down with a multi-step word problem, they have to hold the situation in mind, decide what operation to use, carry out the calculation, and check whether the answer makes sense. If the calculation itself eats up most of the desk, there's nothing left over for the thinking part. The child isn't bad at problem-solving. They just ran out of room.
Automatic recall of basic facts clears that desk. When 7 × 8 arrives instantly instead of being reconstructed, the child's attention stays on the actual problem. This is well-established in cognitive science, and it matches what I see every week in my classroom: the students who struggle with "hard" problems are very often students who are still spending effort on the easy parts.
So the drill isn't there to produce a human calculator. It's there to get the boring part out of the way so the interesting part can happen.
What the ten minutes actually looks like
Korean families didn't invent daily practice, and the format is less exotic than people imagine. The typical routine has a few features worth copying:
- It's short and it's daily. One page. Ten minutes, sometimes five. It happens every day, including days when nothing else gets done.
- It happens at the same time. Before school, or right after snack. The slot matters more than the sheet. Nobody negotiates about it, because there's nothing to negotiate.
- The difficulty is slightly below the child's ceiling. This is the part outsiders get wrong. The daily sheet is not the challenging work. It's material the child has already learned, practiced to the point of fluency. New and hard material belongs in a different session.
- It's checked immediately. Right away, while the problems are still warm. A mistake corrected within a minute teaches something. A mistake discovered next Tuesday teaches nothing.
- The parent's job is small. Set out the sheet, check it, say "done." That's it. No hovering, no coaching, no lecture.
This kind of practice has been packaged and sold in Korea for decades — the big subscription workbook companies deliver a thin stack of pages to your door every week, and plenty of families have used them for two generations. But there's nothing magical in the packaging. A printed page and a pencil do the same job.
Why short and daily beats long and occasional
Parents often propose a reasonable-sounding alternative: skip the daily thing and do an hour on Saturday. Same total time, less nagging. It doesn't work as well, for three reasons.
Spacing. Memory research is unusually clear on this point: practice spread across many short sessions produces more durable learning than the same amount packed into one long one. Forgetting a little between sessions, then retrieving the fact again, is what makes it stick. The Saturday hour skips the productive forgetting entirely.
Fatigue. Concentration on repetitive tasks fades fast in children. Minutes forty through sixty of an arithmetic session are not just less useful than minutes one through ten — they're actively teaching the child that math is an ordeal to be survived.
Identity. This one is soft, but I think it's the most important. A child who does math every day quietly becomes "someone who does math." A child who endures a long session once a week becomes someone who dreads math on Fridays. The habit shapes the self-image, and the self-image shapes everything that comes after.
The ways it goes wrong
I'd be a poor guide if I only told you the good half. Daily drilling fails often, and it usually fails in one of these ways:
- Speed is praised over accuracy. If the only feedback a child hears is about the timer, they'll learn to guess fast. Accuracy first, always. Speed is a side effect of fluency, not a target to chase.
- Drills are used as punishment. "You got three wrong, so do another page." Now the sheet is a threat, and you've spent your child's goodwill for nothing.
- Errors go unexamined. A wrong answer is information. Was it a fact not yet known, a carrying slip, or a misread sign? Thirty seconds of looking is worth more than the whole page.
- Drills replace reasoning instead of supporting it. This is the big one. Fluency in arithmetic does not teach a child what division means, how to model a situation, or how to explain their thinking. If the daily sheet is the entire math diet, you'll produce a child who computes well and understands little. Korean education is criticized for exactly this, and sometimes the criticism lands.
How to start this week
If you want to try it, keep the first version almost insultingly easy. The goal for the first two weeks is not progress — it's proving to your child that this is small and survivable.
- Pick the slot. Attach it to something that already happens: after breakfast, before screens, right when the school bag comes off.
- Choose material your child can already do, and let them get most of it right. Confidence is the fuel here.
- Set a soft timer for ten minutes, and stop when it rings even if the page isn't finished. Ending on time is more important than finishing.
- Check it together in under a minute. Circle mistakes without commentary; let them fix those before the sheet is filed away.
- Mark the day on a calendar. Children care about streaks far more than adults expect.
- Once it's automatic — usually after a few weeks — nudge the difficulty up a notch, or add a light time goal if your child enjoys that sort of thing. Some do. Some don't. Follow the child.
What to expect
Not fireworks. What you'll notice, a couple of months in, is a lack of friction: fewer finger counts, fewer sighs at the sight of a two-digit multiplication, a bit more willingness to try the harder problem at the bottom of the homework page. That's the whole benefit, and it's a real one. It compounds quietly for years.
Korean students do consistently well on international math assessments, and I don't think the daily sheet is the sole reason — family expectations, teacher quality, and yes, a great deal of extra tutoring all play a part, some of it healthier than the rest. But the humble ten-minute habit is the piece I'd most happily recommend to any family anywhere, because it costs almost nothing and asks very little of anyone.
