The 100-Square Calculation Sheet: Japan and Korea's Favorite Math Warm-Up

If you've ever walked past a classroom in Japan or Korea at the start of a math lesson, you may have seen something odd: thirty children, heads down, pencils moving fast, and a teacher holding a stopwatch. On every desk is the same thing — a grid of one hundred empty boxes with a row of digits across the top and a column of digits down the left side. Nobody is talking. The whole thing is over in about two minutes.
That grid is the 100-square calculation sheet — hyaku-masu keisan (百ます計算) in Japanese, baekkan gyesan (백칸 계산) in Korean. It is one of the most widely used math warm-ups in East Asian classrooms, and it has quietly become a favorite with homeschooling parents and tutors elsewhere too. It costs nothing, takes less time than brushing your teeth, and it does one specific job extremely well.
Here's what it is, where it came from, and how to use it at home without turning your kitchen table into a testing center.
What a 100-square sheet actually is
Picture a 10 × 10 grid. Along the top edge, outside the grid, are ten single digits in scrambled order — say 3, 7, 1, 9, 4, 0, 6, 2, 8, 5. Down the left edge, outside the grid, are another ten digits, also scrambled. In the top-left corner sits an operation symbol: +, −, ×, or ÷.
The child's job is to fill in all one hundred boxes. Each box holds the result of combining its row digit with its column digit. Row 7, column 3, addition sheet? Write 10. That's it. One hundred small answers, one page, one timer.
Two design details make it work better than a plain list of problems. First, the digits are shuffled every time, so a child can't fall into a rhythm and coast — 6+4 shows up in an unpredictable place, and there's no pattern to lean on. Second, the format is identical every single day. Because the page never changes, the time it takes becomes a clean measurement. A child who needed four minutes in March and needs ninety seconds in June can see that they got faster, without anyone grading anything.
Where it came from
The method traces back to Japanese elementary school teachers working on basic academic skills, most notably Hiroshi Kishimoto, who promoted 100-square drills as part of a broader push to make sure no child slipped through the cracks on fundamentals. It became a household name in the 2000s thanks to Hideo Kageyama, a teacher in Hyogo Prefecture whose approach — daily 100-square calculation, reading aloud, and early bedtimes — drew national attention and sold enormous numbers of books. For a stretch there, "Kageyama method" was a phrase Japanese parents genuinely discussed at dinner.
The idea crossed over to Korea and settled in comfortably, where it fits the existing culture of daily short drills (maeil hakseupji) that most Korean elementary students grow up with. Today you'll find 100-square sheets in Korean workbooks, in after-school academies, and printed by the ream in hagwon copy rooms. As someone who runs a math academy, I can tell you the appeal is very practical: it's the cheapest possible way to find out what a new student can and can't do, on day one, in two minutes.
Which version to use, and when
All four operations exist as 100-square sheets, but they are not equally useful at every stage. Addition and multiplication carry most of the weight; subtraction is valuable but harder to format; division is the trickiest and is usually adapted rather than used as a straight 10 × 10 grid.

One caution about the multiplication grid: a child who has memorized the times tables as songs often struggles here at first, because the shuffled layout strips away the melody. That stumble is not a failure — it's the sheet doing exactly what it's supposed to do, showing you that the knowledge was stored as a sequence rather than as facts.
How to run it at home in five minutes
The method is simple, but a few habits separate the version that works from the version that makes a child dread math.
- Same time, every day. Right after breakfast, or right when homework starts. Consistency matters far more than duration.
- Time it, but compete only with yesterday. The comparison is the child against their own record. Never against a sibling, never against a classmate.
- Write the time on the page and keep the pages. A stack of sheets with descending times is one of the most motivating objects a young learner can own.
- Check answers together, quickly. Accuracy first, speed second. A fast sheet with eight errors is worse than a slower sheet with none.
- Stop at one sheet. The temptation to do "just one more" is how a two-minute habit becomes a twenty-minute chore that gets abandoned by Thursday.
- Expect a plateau. Times drop quickly at first, then stall. That's normal. The stall is where the automaticity is actually consolidating.
A reasonable goal for addition is getting under two minutes with everything correct, and many children eventually go well below that. But please treat any target as a rough marker rather than a standard — the useful signal is the trend line, not the number.
What it does — and honestly, what it doesn't
Let me be straight with you, because this is where I see parents go wrong.
The 100-square sheet trains one thing: automatic recall of number facts. That is genuinely valuable. Working memory is limited, and when a ten-year-old has to stop and compute 8 × 7 in the middle of a long-division problem or a fractions question, they lose the thread of the actual reasoning. Making the small facts automatic frees up mental room for the parts that need thinking. This is why fluency practice keeps showing up in curricula around the world, under different names.
But it does not teach problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, estimation, word problems, or conceptual understanding of what multiplication means. A child who is lightning-fast on the grid can still be lost when a question is dressed up in a sentence. The sheet is a warm-up, not the workout. Used as a five-minute opener before real math, it's excellent. Used as a substitute for real math, it produces exactly the kind of fast, shallow calculation that gives drill practice a bad name.
There's also a small group of children for whom the stopwatch is genuinely counterproductive — kids for whom timing creates enough anxiety that performance drops. If that's your child, keep the grid and drop the timer entirely. Untimed daily practice still builds the facts.
A four-week way to start
If you want to try it, don't overhaul anything. Week one, do addition sheets only, untimed, and just get the routine established. Week two, add the stopwatch and write the time on each page. Week three, keep going and resist adding a second sheet. Week four, look at the stack together — the improvement will usually be obvious enough that your child will want to keep the streak alive on their own.
Then, and only then, consider moving to multiplication. There's no prize for rushing.
The reason this little grid has survived decades in Japanese and Korean classrooms isn't that it's clever. It's that it's small, repeatable, and self-evidently effective to the child doing it. Two minutes a day, a visible number that gets better, and a parent nearby who cares more about the streak than the score.
