The Oh-dap Note: How Korean Families Turn Wrong Answers Into Higher Scores

If you walk into a Korean student's room around exam season, you'll often find a notebook that looks nothing like a textbook. It's messier. The pages are a mix of taped-in photocopies, hand-copied problems, red pen, and short scribbled notes in the margin like "read the question wrong — again." This is the 오답노트 (oh-dap note), literally the "wrong answer note," and it is one of the most ordinary, least glamorous habits in Korean math education.
It's also one of the most useful things I've seen for the problem almost every parent describes to me the same way: "My child understands the material. They just make careless mistakes."
I run a math academy, and I've watched hundreds of students work through this. What follows is what the practice actually looks like day to day, why it works, and how to start it at home without turning your evenings into a battle.
What an oh-dap note actually is (and what it isn't)
The idea is simple: every problem you get wrong goes into a notebook, gets re-solved, and gets a one-line explanation of why you missed it. That's it. There's no official format, no approved template. Some students keep a separate notebook per subject; others keep one per exam cycle.
What it isn't is equally important. An oh-dap note is not a place to copy the answer key. This is the single most common way the habit fails. A student gets a problem wrong, glances at the solution, writes it out neatly in nice handwriting, feels productive, and learns nothing. The notebook becomes an art project.
The value is in the gap between "I got it wrong" and "here's exactly what went wrong in my head." Closing that gap is uncomfortable, which is why it works — and why it takes some coaching at the start.
There's also a practical reason Korean students lean on this so heavily. Korean math instruction is built around large volumes of practice problems, and the college entrance exam (수능, or Suneung) rewards accuracy under time pressure as much as it rewards understanding. When you're doing dozens of problems a week, your errors are the only signal telling you where your actual weak points are. Everything else is noise.
Why "careless" is usually the wrong diagnosis
Here's the shift that makes the oh-dap note powerful. When a parent says "careless mistake," they usually mean "my child knows better." That's often true. But "careless" is a description of the outcome, not a cause — and you can't fix an outcome.
When students start writing down the reason for each error, something interesting happens within two or three weeks: patterns appear. One student misreads "at least" as "exactly" over and over. Another drops negative signs specifically when distributing across parentheses. Another rushes the last four problems of every test because they burn nine minutes on one hard question early.
None of those are "carelessness." They're four different problems with four different fixes. The notebook is what makes them visible.
Once a student sees "I misread the question" written in their own handwriting for the fifth time, the habit stops being abstract. They start underlining key words during tests without being told. That's the whole mechanism — not discipline, just visibility.
Sorting errors into types
Most academies teach students to tag each mistake with a short category. The exact labels don't matter much; what matters is that the student picks one and can defend it. Here's a version I use with families, with the fix that tends to actually move the needle for each type.

Notice that only one row of that table is about knowing less math. The other four are about process. That's roughly the ratio I see in real notebooks, and it's why "just do more problems" so often fails to raise scores.
How to actually run it at home
The habit lives or dies on how small you keep it. A few things that make the difference:
- Don't copy every problem by hand. Copying is slow and kills motivation fast. Photocopy the problem, print it, or just cut and tape it in. The thinking is the point, not the transcription.
- Re-solve before reading the solution. Give it one honest attempt from scratch. Only look at the answer key after that attempt fails. This single rule separates a real oh-dap note from a decorative one.
- One line on why. Not a paragraph. "Forgot to flip the inequality when dividing by a negative" is perfect. If your child can't write the line, they haven't understood the error yet — that's the signal to help.
- Revisit on a schedule. The classic pattern is to redo the problem after about a week, then again before the next test. If it's right both times, it can leave the notebook.
- Let problems graduate. A notebook that only grows becomes intimidating. Crossing problems out is the reward.
- Cap the volume. Three to five problems per study session is plenty. Ten is a chore, and chores get skipped.
The part parents get wrong
I'll be blunt about the failure mode I see most, because it's well-intentioned. A parent starts checking the notebook the way you'd check homework — is it neat, is it complete, did you do today's entries? Within a month the notebook becomes something the child produces for the parent, and its whole diagnostic value evaporates.
The oh-dap note works because it's the student's private record of their own thinking, including the embarrassing parts. If writing "I panicked and guessed" gets a lecture, they'll stop writing it.
A better role for you: ask about patterns, not compliance. "What kind of mistake shows up the most lately?" is a question that makes a child look at their own notebook. "Did you do your error notes today?" is a question that makes them dread it.
Also, resist the urge to fix the handwriting or the layout. A messy notebook that gets used beats a beautiful one that doesn't.
What to expect, honestly
This isn't a fast fix. The first two weeks usually feel like extra work for no return, because the student is just building the log. The payoff comes when there's enough history to see repetition — that's typically somewhere around the third or fourth week, and it often arrives as a small offhand comment like "oh, I always mess up this kind of problem."
That sentence is the goal. A student who knows their own specific failure modes will catch them mid-test, which is something no amount of extra worksheets can teach directly.
One last note for younger students: for elementary and early middle school, keep it verbal at first. Have your child tell you what went wrong before they write anything. Many kids can explain the error perfectly well but stall at putting it on paper, and you don't want the writing to become the obstacle.
The habit is genuinely low-tech. A cheap notebook, a red pen, and the willingness to look at your own wrong answers for thirty seconds longer than feels comfortable. That's the entire method — and it's why it has quietly survived in Korean study culture for decades.
